Journal - Speaking English

Speaking English, the Journal of the English Speaking Board, is published twice a year, in Spring and Autumn. Originally destined for members of the organisation its appeal has now widened to all those interested in developments in the field of oral communication.
This year's editions have included David Rudkin's thoughtful piece "What Flame we Carry", on how language changes, and Josephine Hart's passionate defence of listening to poetry well-spoken in "Read and not Heard?". There is practical advice to teachers on how to deal with selective mutism, and how to choose a school play. "What is Makaton?" provides new knowledge for those interested in the field of Special Needs. Future editions will include include portraits of ESOL learners, and an article on how a substantial grant from the Arts Council enabled one Herefordshire village to put on a community play. Book reviews focus on new books of particular interest.
Members of the English Speaking Board receive the Journal free. Subscription copies are also available at £15 + postage per annum, from Debra Moore, 26a Princes Street, Southport, PR8 1EQ
